Dancing through life

The beauty of dance is that it’s for everybody, at every age and the benefits are available whenever you begin.

I spoke with Camilla Foster this week at The Independent to contribute to an article discussing the health benefits of dance in later life. As the new series of strictly is upon us, the focus will be on dance and I for one can’t wait - Strictly is a wonderful way to inspire everyone to dance.

Below are some of the health benefits if you are considering dance as a way to exercise or simply as a hobby;

  • Increase in strength and muscle endurance

Dance often involves supporting your own body weight, lifting limbs, and holding postures, which strengthens muscles in the legs, core, and even arms. Repeated movements improve muscle endurance, meaning the muscles can work for longer without tiring. Over time, this can make everyday activities also feel easier.

  • Improves balance and co-ordination

Many dance steps involve shifting weight from one foot to another, turning, or maintaining posture while moving. This strengthens the stabilizing muscles in the ankles, knees, and hips while training the brain and body to work together. The result: a reduced risk of falls and better physical control.

  • Enhanced memory and cognitive function

Learning and remembering choreography stimulates the brain’s memory centers. Dancers must recall sequences, timing, and spatial patterns, which exercises working memory and long-term memory - both essential for keeping the mind sharp in later years.

  • Increases confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing

As dancers master new steps, make progress, and perhaps even perform in front of others, they often gain a sense of accomplishment. Feeling capable physically and socially can boost self-worth and confidence in other areas of life. Music and movement also stimulate the brain’s reward centers, and the shared enjoyment of dance can be uplifting, even on tough days.

As well as joining boutique studios and dance centres there are many local and community groups offering dance sessions for all. What are you waiting for?!
